²⁰ Adam^[a] named his wife Eve,^[b](A) because she would become the mother of all the living.

²¹ The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.^{(B) 22} And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us,^(C) knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life^(D) and eat, and live forever.” ²³ So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden^(E) to work the ground^(F) from which he had been taken. ²⁴ After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side^[c] of the Garden of Eden^(G) cherubim^(H) and a flaming sword^(I) flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.^(J)

Cain and Abel

4 Adam^[a] made love to his wife^(A) Eve,^(B) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.^[b](C) She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth^[c] a man.”

² Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.^(A)

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.^(B)

²⁵ Adam made love to his wife^(A) again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,^[a](B) saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”^(C)

From Adam to Noah

5 This is the written account^(A) of Adam’s family line.^(B)

When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God.^{(C) 2} He created them^(D) male and female^(E) and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind”^[a] when they were created.

³ When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image;^(F) and he named him Seth.^{(G) 4} After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. ⁵ Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.^(H)
